Sculpture
Sculpture could be defined as art utilizing extension in space. I draw little distinction between utilitarian objects and what is traditionally referred to as sculpture. Likewise, I do not distinguish between craft and fine art. Both can be done well; both can be done poorly. I enjoy the creative pursuits of humankind through many media and styles. If “art” is approached with passion and technical skill, it is an intriguing and exciting component of our existence. I have a highly specific aesthetic, which largely influences my style of sculpture. Some people like it enough to commission Thak-style art… and that makes me happy.
Armour and Props
I started Thak Ironworks as a teenager, making armour for sport combat in a reenactment group. Eventually, my armour pursuits led me away from utility combat armour and more into fantasy armour for costumes and collectors. This, in turn, led to the making of armour, weapons and costumes for the film industry. Armour is hugely time-consuming to build, and based on my shop overhead, I am unable to produce low-priced generic pieces that can be found from “off-shore” sources. Instead, producing armour has become only financially viable for collectors with very specific needs and, of course, the film industry. Movies, television and the advertising industry often bring me fun, interesting and weird projects.
Gates and Doors
For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with medieval-style doors. I have indulged this fascination at my shop and home with no less than ten uniquely custom Thak-built doors or gates (more are planned). Luckily, I also have a select clientele who order some pretty cool doors and gates, often, but not always, for their wine cellars.
Home and Hearth
A large percentage of the work we do at Thak Ironworks falls into this category. We work closely with several high-end home builders specializing in distinctive signature homes. Highly customized, hand-crafted items are made to order to help achieve that unique look and feel, such as range hoods, railings, furniture, and fireplace accessories.
