Basic Blacksmithing Class – Tool Making

June 28 @ 4:00 pm – June 30 @ 4:30 pm

This blacksmithing course is well designed to help the beginner develop good basic techniques. We start with lighting and controlling the fire and hammer control. Students have the opportunity to work on both coal and propane forges.

Projects incorporate basic forging techniques allowing students to learn while building fire tools they can keep and use on their own forge. These tools include a shovel, rake and poker. Probably the most challenging project of the course would be the forging of a pair of blacksmiths tongs. Requiring precision hammer work along with a fair degree of physical effort, the tong project is demanding and ultimately very rewarding. The forging of chisels and center punches is also included. Introduction to toll steels and traditional heat treating methods.

This blacksmithing course includes several other projects along with time for experimentation. While definitely a hands on course, there is still plenty of time for discussions of techniques, design, aesthetics, and traditions. Also many advance techniques such as forge welding are demonstrated and discussed. Resource info on forge construction as well as discussions on basic set up requirements provide the would be hobby smith with everything required to get started at home.

Students always seem to enjoy the weekend and the camaraderie of the other students. Positive team atmosphere of mutual accomplishment make for a uniquely memorable experience. Well worth the money since the student leaves with their own tools and knowledge to begin on their own.

No experience is required but The New Edge of the Anvil is highly recommended as our suggested prerequisite text.

All materials and refreshments included.

$700.00 CAD + HST.

20 hours Intensive study. Course runs 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Day 1, and 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Day 2 and 3.
